The Not Festival is back in Copenhagen. It is happening from September 8 to 13, 2014. The tittle chosen for this year’s Not Festival is "THIRD CLASS CITIZEN and The Pop Up Queer's Shelter", and it will be focusing in the question of queernes: the unusual, the strange, the unpredictable. It will be comprised of 6 days with the evening's events and called "The Pop Up Queer's Shelter" and numbered from 1 to 6. Happening since 2003, this is its 6th episode and the 3rd - and probably the last- in Copenhagen. Working without the support, financial and otherwise from the local Arts Agency, all the activities will be created, developed and presented in collaboration and with the support of The Danish National School of Performing Arts – Continuing Education and Dance Education, BYGN5 at PB43 and Overgaden.

The Not Festival is a kaleidoscopic, ephemeral, erratic and nomadic artistic object. It embraces the ideas of global artistic collaboration and the cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, DIY attitudes.Through the use of old and new artistic approaches, technologies and media it exists outside the realm of the establishment, which implies generally non-existing financial support. However, its inclusive nature allows it to move inside and outside of institutions and at the same time avoid the institutional restrictions. This political “object” aims to fight the standardized and systematized commodities of the arts. Thus, it is NOT a FESTIVAL.

It serves as a platform for experimentation, creation, presentation and open dialogues. It consists of a series of performances and installations, jams, screenings, lectures and discussions of topics that are relevant to contemporary dance, performance and art today, as well as contemporary dance classes and workshops.

In every edition of the Not Festival a conceptual framework is offered to the participants and it is embedded in the title chosen for each occasion. However, it is open to the artists‘ own interpretations. Participants are not restricted to having to use it, but can get in and out of it; re- frame it; re-conceptualize it; and fully remove themselves from it to allow meaning to be created in tandem with their own creative process.

The event also questions the boundaries and definitions of the generally accepted roles of the “presenter” and the “presented”. Participant artists are encouraged to play an active role in managing and facilitating it, and to use their creativity not only in their own work but also in the creation of the event itself. For instances, My Lindblad and Gry Raaby , two Copenhagen-based choreographers/ dancers are helping to coordinate the event and to organize a team of other Copenhagen-based artists. The Dance Department of The Danish National School of Performing Arts has agreed to be part of this and to help to co-produce part of the event as this will be of great benefit for its students.

  “A chair, a desk, a soundtrack, that doesn't start. A dancer in a shirt uses strong sound effects to imitate a robot. Indeed an understandable, even
  conventional idea, that is until  Xavier Le Roy' s (1963, France) play turns into a gripping mental space. Head over heels, the dancer' s body is transformed in a real time into a series of hallucinogenic morphological aberrations, representing images of body that reconfigures itself based to unwritten laws and a disquieting, inhuman rhythm. It undergoes long stases, makes infinite movements and begins to crawl abruptly. In addition to the torsion carried out in the "spectacle de danse" (dance performance), Xavier Le Roy taps into a new field where scientific and social data is transferred and imprinted in imaginary representations of the body."  Francois Piron in the journal des arts of Connivence, 6th Biennale de Lyon.

  “In a thin-strapped dress Mr. Barba wafted his wrists girlishly. With his face and body shrouded in red fabric, tight around the neck like a napkin ghost, or wielding a pole within his costume to make it billow, he suggested what Martha Graham might have seen in Wigman. And the costuming raised other questions of history and authenticity. Did Wigman actually wear, as Mr. Barba did, a hoop dress of see-through mesh? Through that mesh Mr. Barba’s hairy chest was visible, but gender bending did not seem to be the point. His fidelity laid bare the monotony in Wigman’s work. His precision underlined its foursquare connection to the music, whether repetitive piano figures or gongs.” Brian Seibert. The New York Times.

The Not Festival: An atypical point of view, if you allow me will take place from October 22nd to 27th, 2012. It will serve as a platform for experimentation, creation, presentation and open dialogues. Among others, activities include contemporary dance classes taught by Jeremy Nelson; Movement and Sound taught by Brussels based composer  Matteo Fargion ( long time Jonathan Burrows' collaborator); Controlling sound and video in performances with Junxion software, lead by Amsterdam based sound artist Ivo Bol; Improvisation and composition workshop by Lucy Suggate; and Feldenkrais workshop taught by New York based teacher/choreographer Jimena Paz. The exhibitions, performances and lectures involve local and international artists.

There are many ways in which people can get involved and participate. They can take the classes and workshops, show a work in progress or show an old short piece during the evening performances or create one in the space facilitated by the Not Festival, they can participate in the lectures or come to see the performances and screenings. • Workshop: CREATIVE CONTROL: Controlling sound and video in performances and installations with Junction. Lead by Amsterdam based sound artist Ivo Bol.  16:30 to 19:30. This workshop for musicians, dancers, VJ's and installation artists will be about working with the JunXion software to control sound and video using cameras, USB game controllers and Wii remote. It involves learning the technology and using it to create a performance to be presented as part of the Not Festival activities. (Lille Carl).

• Portrait Of The Artists With Black Framed Glasses. First Session: 19:30 to 20:30. Skype Artists Talk and Collective Dinner. 5 artists who work in different artistic disciplines ( dance, installations, performances, new technologies, graphic design, science, photography, etc) will be invited to talk about their work through Skype. The artists live in Hong Kong, Vienna, Ontario, Copenhagen, Illinois, Honolulu and New York and create work that includes community, public spaces, education, environment, technology and in many ways intersects with social and political issues. • Workshop: CREATIVE CONTROL: Controlling sound and video in performances and installations with Junxion. Lead by Amsterdam based sound artist Ivo Bol. 16:30 to 19:30. This workshop for musicians, dancers, VJ's and installation artists will be about working with the JunXion software to control sound and video using cameras, USB game controllers and Wii remote. It involves learning the technology and using it to create a performance to be presented as part of the Not Festival activities.  (Lille Carl).

• Workshop: ‘Crossing the Stage’ and other scores. Lead by Belgium based composer and performer Matteo Fargion - a long time Jonathan Burrows' collaborator. 14:45 –17:45.  A 3 day composition workshop focussing on what happens when ideas techniques and structures which come primarily from music are translated into movement.  The sessions will consist of numerous quick-fire exercises, often using extreme reduction of possibilities to stimulate the imagination.  Questions about how to find material, how to keep something going, what makes a strong or a weak change and other compositional ‘problems’ will be discussed. Burrows and Fargion describe what they do as 'handmade and human- scale'. They build with simple, non-spectacular elements but arrive often at a deceptive virtuosity, radiating delight even as it makes the audience think. Over the past ten years the two artists have built a body of duets which juxtapose the formality of music composition with a radical and open approach toperformance and audiences. Cheap Lecture and The Cow Piece are a conversation with the structure of John Cage's Lecture On Nothing, at once a homage to and questioning of a way of thinking that has underpinned so much dance and performance in the last thirty years.

negotiationofspace at Not Festival

i am amy buckley and half of negotiationofspace.

negotiationofspace is a collaboration between myself and my identical twin, hannah which explores the nature of twins from the inside out, using this as a starting point to create work. our practise is based in movement and visual art.

Not Festival is an extension of concepts we are already working with. as negotiationofspace is evolving we are constantly engineering new ways to collaborate across continents. due to physical circumstance, i.e. living, working and creating in different countries much of our work is transient, stored in a virtual reality or ideas contained between ourselves, waiting for creation. Not Festival is an opportunity to anchor our work in reality.

the work which will be shown at Not Festival summarizes ongoing challenges within our negotiation and is symbolic of our relationship - the starting point for this collaboration.

The Not Festival : On horns, hair, hens, haze and other (Orgi)anic things is a two-week event created by 3RD CLASS CITIZEN, and Venezuelan choreographer and multi-disciplinary artist Luis Lara Malvacías and presented in association with Movement Research, the Greenspan Center,Williamsburg, and Gallery Galou. It will take place from September 24^th to October 8^th, 2011.  The event consists of a series of site-specific performances and installations, art exhibitions, jams, lectures and discussions of topics that are relevant to contemporary dance and art today, as well as contemporary dance classes and workshops.

Renowned international dance teachers will lead the dance classes and workshops. Classes will be lead by Jeremy Nelson, Luis Lara Malvacias, Francis Stansky, Judith Sanchez Ruiz, Melanie Maar and Jon Kinzel. Participants include artists from different cultural backgrounds who live and work in New York, as well as guest artists from abroad. Movement Research will co-produce two evening of Studies Project in partnership with the Not Festival. The discussions include topics that are relevant to contemporary dance and art today. The first one, Underground Citizen : Artistic Underground Movement Today,  will take  place on Wednesday September 28th. The second one, Public Criticism: The importance of Social Media in the transformation of criticism, will take place on October 5th. Both discussion start at 7pm at the Green Span Center.Free entry but reservation is required.
